Kiln firing policies have changed for some studio users. Read more here

In December, we will be offering Monday and Tuesday wheel throwing courses only to allow our staff to enjoy the holiday season. Back to the usual schedule in 2027.
Firing Policies
Kiln Space for Students & Members
Effective October 6, 2026, we are updating how kiln space is allocated and tracked.
For students enrolled in our wheel throwing courses, the class fee includes 0.5 cubic feet of kiln space per session. This replaces our previous system, in which students received 25 lbs of clay and could fire the entire amount of work produced from that clay allocation.
Any work exceeding the 0.5 cubic feet of included kiln space will be charged at $0.05 per additional cubic foot.
For studio members, the 0.5 cubic feet of kiln space has always been part of the monthly membership allotment. What is changing is that we are now implementing a kiln-space tracking system so that we can monitor usage more accurately. Members whose work exceeds their monthly allotment will be charged at the same rate of $0.05 per additional cubic foot.
We recognize that this is a change from the way we have operated in the past, and we appreciate everyone's patience as we put the new system into practice. We will all be working out the kinks together, and our goal is to make the process as straightforward, fair, and transparent as possible.
Our kiln space is a limited and shared resource, and tracking usage will help us ensure that it is available equitably to all of our students and members.
Questions About Kiln Firing
We are unfortunately unable to accept outside or community work for kiln firing.
Our studio is currently at capacity with the work produced by our existing students and members, and we do not have the kiln space to accommodate additional pieces from outside the studio.
We understand that finding a place to fire pottery can be difficult, and we are sorry that we cannot offer this service. We appreciate your understanding as we prioritize the needs of our current studio community.
Cone 10 Studio: Clay & Glaze Requirements
We are a strict Cone 10 studio. This is an important part of what makes our studio unique, and it allows us to produce artisanal, high-quality firings comparable to those found in university ceramics programs.
Our kilns are operated at Cone 10/11 in a reduction atmosphere, and we take great care to protect the equipment and maintain consistent firing results. Because of the high temperatures and specialized firing atmosphere, we are particularly protective of our kilns.
For this reason, we strongly discourage the use of glazes that are not provided by the studio. Commercial glazes may be labeled as Cone 10-compatible, but that does not necessarily mean they will perform well in our specific Cone 10/11 reduction firing environment. We have found that outside glazes can behave unpredictably at these temperatures and may cause problems with the work itself, other pieces in the kiln, kiln shelves, or kiln elements.
Using our studio clay bodies and glazes helps us protect our equipment while also giving everyone the best chance of achieving beautiful, consistent results.
